My Review of Fangirl: 4 stars
A very different premise for a YA novel, I thought… one that actually makes fun of the genre itself! Cath is obsessed with the Simon Snow novels (which are obviously Harry Potter), to the point where she writes fan fiction and has an enormous worldwide following. But she uses her obsession to hide from real life. As she goes through her (comparatively mundane) transition into life as a college freshman, little by little her experiences pull her away from her fan fic and she begins to interact in real time. It’s a very engaging coming-of-age novel, and relatable for anyone who tends to occasionally prefer to escape reality in a good story!
