Lily is a hapless, likable artist who has no idea how to function in the real world–and her best friend Renee, a successful attorney, never lets her forget it. The girls met in art school, but Lily stayed the course, while Renee married Lily’s ex-boyfriend (whom she was still in love with at the time, at least on some level), had his children, and now treats Lily like she’s a constant mess for Renee to clean up. Both characters were really well done… I feel like I know Lily (she reminds me of someone I do know actually), and I just want to shake her and tell her to learn to stand up for herself for a change…
…Which is pretty much what the plot of the book does. She realizes ten years too late that she’s still married to a complete stranger (you have to suspend your disbelief a bit on that one–who gets married in Vegas and forgets about it?), so she goes to track him down and finally get an annulment. Only it turns out, he’s a dot-com millionaire who’s reinvested it all to try to save his hometown, and he thinks she’s out for his money. Therein lies much of the tension which keeps the plot going, enabling Lily to stick around Minnow Bay, falling in love with the town, the quirky characters, and eventually, her ex-husband too.
