A fun, quick adventure story set in (I gathered) turn-of-the-century Mexico, this read like an English lit pick from high school representing the conflict of man vs nature, or man vs creature or monster.
Ramon grows up diving for pearls, and helping his father to polish and sell them. He’s heard the stories of the enormous Pearl of Heaven, and dreams of finding it. When he does, the whole town collectively holds their breaths–will it have a flaw? (Spoiler alert: it does not). The next challenge is, will El Diablo, a mythical monster of the deep, curse him and his village until he returns it?
The target audience is definitely middle grade boys, but I still felt like the pacing was good enough that it held my interest. I listened in an afternoon.
