I don’t know if this is my favorite of Jeff Wheeler’s series, or if it’s just my favorite of the ones I’ve read most recently, since I’ve read quite a few of his. I always enjoy the character dynamics, but for most of his books, I feel like I can hardly distinguish one from another — the worlds seem similar to me. Not this one: the magic and the world building is completely unique. I love that magic has to be sung, that there’s a race of antagonists to men that hibernate for sometimes hundreds of years at a time and thrive in the cold, and can take over their bodies. And I especially love the concept that when one of the aesir are forced out of a human body, they have to find another… it’s not quite reincarnation, but the upshot is essentially the same. In this one, Rob and McKenna we learn have had to find and fall in love with each other over a thousand lifetimes…
I can’t really summarize any more without giving it away. This one did end on a cliffhanger, but fortunately the next book was already available to read right away, which I did!
