
A compelling business read that I think applies to any organization, really… the concept is that if you “start with why” you built a business in the first place, you’ll essentially be seeking that first, rather than the things like money, prestige, numbers, etc. These things will come, and you’ll build your tribe of people who are passionate about the same things… but as the organization grows, the challenge from success becomes what he calls “the split.” This is where management changes, and whether the subsequent leaders can maintain the original vision, or instead begin to focus on growth. Those that don’t navigate “the split” well then lose the following they had, and their employees begin to feel that they’re just working a job, rather than for a cause. There’s a lot of food for thought, particularly for business owners.
