I’ve read several Jenny Colgan books now — they’re all cozy and sweet, which is why I read them, but not clean, which is why I knocked off a star (not that she claims to be clean, that’s just no preference.) There’s a decent amount of language, and a lot of sex, though (mostly) in a fade-to-black kind of way. If you can overlook that, though, this one is very entertaining.
The story follows Polly, who moved to an extremely remote British island, seeking a new start in her early 30s with no money and no plan. She’s a terrific baker, but her landlady happens to own the town bakery, and she’s a curmudgeon who feels easily threatened. Polly bakes as a form of self-therapy, and innocently gives away her goodies to the locals, but has to do it on the down-low (an illicit bakery business -ha). Meanwhile she rescues a baby puffin with a broken wing (insert big watery eye emoji here) and slowly learns the town gossip, while of course two men enter the picture–one who’s clearly the love interest from the beginning, while the other is a sort of red herring.
Just an all-around charming happily-ever-after escape.
