This book establishes the difference between shame (“I am bad”) vs guilt (“I did something bad,”) how the former tends to drive disconnection and hiding, and that vulnerability (the opposite of shame) is key to authenticity. “Daring greatly” is about choosing to be vulnerable even when the outcome is uncertain, because it’s the only way that we can truly connect with others.
The most interesting aspect of the research she presents, to me, was how differently men and women experience shame, though it made a lot of sense when I read it: women tend to be perfectionists, while men tend to hide and perceived weaknesses.
A really thought-provoking read.
