My overall rating: *** 1/2 The experience of reading the Twilight Saga was such a strange contradiction. There are so
many things I dislike about the series, and I find the main character particularly obnoxious… and yet, it's compelling. I want to keep reading. I'm sure you know the rough idea: human girl (Bella) and vampire (Edward) fall in love, and Bella keeps finding herself in mortal danger from various night creatures whilst later torn between the Edward and her werewolf best friend Jacob. It's clean, it's entertaining, it's strangely addictive... and yet I eventually had enough and stopped listening about 1/4 of the way through the last book. So do I recommend it? Yes, but... with some caveats. 🙂 #bookstagram #twilight #stepheniemeyer

My rating: *** 1/2 “An Enchantment of Ravens” is a happily-ever-after story (which I’m glad about, because I like happy endings, but it did feel a little too convenient.) Still, I enjoyed the story, and liked Isobel’s and Rook’s characters fo the most part. I also really liked the fact that, unlike most faery stories, the Fair Ones aren’t *all* glamour. In Rogerson’s version (if not in other versions, I don’t know the lore that well), their glamour covers ugliness in their persons, mold and rot in their clothes and food and dwellings. They are immortal, but apparently not immune to time in other ways. The best they can do is hide that under their glamour. I thought that was an interesting twist. #bookstagram #yafantasy

My overall series rating: *****! There's nothing like the delight of re-experiencing an old favorite series! While the movies are great, and pretty darn close to the books as far as movies go, the books are just incredible. Getting inside Katniss's head makes everything so much more poignant than only watching the action from the outside. My collective rating: **** 1/2 The Royal Spyness series is so much fun! The premise: Lady Georgiana is 32nd in line to the British throne at the time of Queen Mary (after WWI and before WWII). This means she’s just royal enough for it to be inappropriate for her to work for a living, and yet too far removed from the royal family to actually have means of her own, especially after the Great War. She therefore works as an undercover maid, but pretends to her royal connections, and especially the Queen, that she is well-to-do and “respectable.” If the Queen were to find out the truth, she’s afraid she would ship her off to the country to be a lady-in-waiting for Princess Anne, and she would never see society again. Or, worse yet, she’d be married off to her nemesis Prince Sigfried, aka “Fish Face,” who secretly prefers boys. Meanwhile, Queen Mary enlists Georgie’s assistance in trying to interest her wayward son David, the Prince of Wales, in someone–anyone–more appropriate for him than the married American woman, Wallace Simpson. In the process of trying to carry out the Queen’s wishes without letting her or anyone else know of her dire financial straits, dead bodies keep turning up–and it’s up to Georgie to figure out whodunit and why. And periodically, the dashing Scottish playboy (and possible spy?) Darcy O’Mara keeps showing up in her life, only to vanish again with no warning. SO much fun — a great lighthearted cozy mystery series. #bookstagram #cozymystery
